Grandma Elsie

4 days after my Japanese dance teacher, Suga Kunitomo passed away, I received a phone call from Loren and his mom letting me know that Grandma Elsie fell into a critical condition. (About Suga's passing, please read this entry.)

Those of you who know me well or having been reading this blog, you probably know that Loren and I dated for almost 4 years. While we lived together, we assisted Grandma Elsie who was Loren's dear grandmother. Loren and I parted in 2008, but we have been good friends and more than just friends - a brother and a sister. Thanks to Ty and Loren's big hearts that they respect each other and get along well. Loren even has stayed at Ty's Boulder home a couple of times :)

I was informed that Grandma Elsie was not doing so well, and I felt that her end was approaching like Suga's was, so I was planning to visit her during the summer break. As I was trying to plan my summer, I received the phone calls. I immediately bought an air ticket and flew to Milwaukee, WI.

Loren's mom, Melanie came to pick me up at the airport and we headed to the nursing home. Loren currently resides in Arizona, and he was driving to Milwaukee from there. He had not arrived yet.

Grandma was lying down on her usual bed in her usual room. Although I did not expect her to respond, I said, "Hi Grandma, here I am!" as usual. There were her nursing home friends and nurses coming in and out to say good bye to her. I left Maui at 10 pm the previous night and wasn't able to get a good sleep in the plane, so I was very sleepy at that time. When there was no guests in the room, I climbed on to her bed and said, "Grandma, excuse me. I'm so sleepy because I didn't sleep much last night. You don't mind me sleeping here, do you?" Then I curled up like cat below her feet. I sometimes slept like that on her bed on Maui.

At lunch time, Melanie, Loren's younger sister, and I went to a nearby restaurant to get some lunch for take out. I remembered how I used to eat with her in her room on Maui.

Melanie's partner, Gus also came. Loren's sister went home to check on her little children.

I told Grandma, "Loren will be here soon." Nurses frequently came to check on her and wiped her mouth with a big wet cotton swab and gave her some Morphines.  Grandma's breathing was getting faster and rougher, so they gave her more.

Grandma's body was still breathing, but I felt like most of her soul was outside of her body, and her consciousness was watching herself from somewhere in the room. And I felt like she was telling me, "Put a blanket on you. You would catch a cold like that." Melanie went in and out of the room and was making phone calls to Garndma's relatives and friends. I spoke to Grandma Elsie in my heart.
"Grandma, are you ready to go?"
"I hope you can eat as much ice cream as you want in heaven." (She was a lovable ice cream monster.)
"Grandma, I will never forget about you. Thank you for loving me so much."
"Loren will be here soon. Please watch over him 'cause you know he can be a goof ball sometimes."
"We did many things together, huh? I have so many fun memories with you..."

I grabbed little naps here and there whenever there was a chance. But I had a total confidence that I would not miss her last moment. I knew that she would wake me up. I continued to doze out as I warmed her cold feet with my belly.

And still this day, I remember "the air" so vividly.
It was about 4 pm. Loren was't there yet but just texted us that he was about 30 minutes away.
Waking up from my 5th or 6th snooze, I felt something different in the air.
I saw the fairy rust in the air. And I felt as if Grandma's room was connected to a different dimensional world. It was very quiet. And the room was filled with peaceful and calm air. It would not have been strange if an angel came down. Maybe it did.

When I realized what it could have meant, I instantly looked up Grandma, and there was a doctor who was taking her pulse. Her breathing was weaker, and there was a longer interval between each breath. The doctor said, "It's close." She went out to look for Melanie and Gus. Melanie called Loren's sister, and I called Loren. The doctor came back and went outside again.  Gus, Melanie, and I counted between each breath. Sometimes, she did not inhale for awhile, so we wondered if that was it, and then as if she just remembered, she took the next breath, "Nghaaaaaaa." I told her in my heart, "Oh, Grandma, you're so good at surprising me until the very end." It was a thrill-full time. There was a part of me who was calm and even sensed some humor in the situation - the humor that Grandma and I could tenderly relate. And at the same time, there was a part of me that got quieter and quieter as I realized that I was about to witness someone's last moment for the first time in my life. I felt so honored and thanked Creator and Grandma for showing me something so significant using all her power and might.

There was a time when she did not breath for 50 seconds, and then she took a small inhale and exhaled, and then she did not take the next breath for 60 seconds, 70 seconds, 80 seconds, and then 90 seconds.  When the doctor came back, Gus told her that Grandma had not breathed for 90 seconds. The doctor took Grandma's pulse and listened to her heart beat, and then she turned around and said, "She's gone." At that moment, Gus held Melanie tight. Tears welled up in my eyes. I thought, "I see, I still cannot help to cry even I had all day to prepare for this." Then some minutes later, Loren's sister arrived, and 20 minutes later, Loren arrived. I was worried if they would be saddened that they missed the moment, but they said, "If that's what mean to happen, and so be it."

Then we surrounded Grandma and gave her thanks and prayed for her.

When she took the last breath, I was sitting by her feet. I felt as if Suga was there, too. Suga met Grandma several times, and Grandma has come to see me perform Izanai Yosakoi, too. Maybe Suga was saying something like, "Thank you for looking after Akari. If you like, I would accompany you for a little walk." And I'm sure that Grandma's son, parents, and husband were there, too. And of course Autumn Leaf.

Grandma Elsie had Parkinson's Disease for many years. After she passed away, I could easily picture her dancing waltz saying, "Oh, how nice to have a free body!" She was a cute, charming lady, always joking as her deep blue eyes sparkled like a little rascal. As far as I know, she had had many challenges in her life, but she was always cheerful and positive. There were a lot to learn from her how she loved life and people no matter what.

At that night, we ate dinner at Loren's sister and her husband's home. As I watched Loren's niece and nephew (Grandma's great grandchildren), I thought of a flow of human lives pulsating powerfully and continuously for centuries.

And then some days later, Grandma's body was transported to Cleveland, Ohio where she was born and raised. We all drove there form Milwaukee. It was a long drive, but it was fun, and again I thought how big America is. Loren's nephew had a question regarding Grandma's body being transported. He asked his mom, "How does she get to Cleveland," so she answered, "She will get in a plane." Then he was quiet for some seconds and thinking, so his mom assumed that he was probably picturing Grandma Elsie sitting in a regular seat, so she told him that her body will be put in a box. Loren, she, and I laughed hard as we imagined Grandma sitting in one of those regular economy seats, and whoever happened to sit next to her needs to hold her up. "Well, that's a lot of trouble to ask some stranger."

In Cleveland, her funeral took a place at a church where she was baptized as a baby. I though that it was amazing. Two ceremonies: one for the beginning of life and the other for the ending of life, taking a place at the same location. There ware people who have known Grandma for many, many years. As Grandma was about to turn 88 years old in two weeks, many of her classmates have already passed away, but there was a lady close to 100 years old, and they had known each other sine they were very little. I thought that it was also amazing to know someone so well for that long.

In Cleveland, I could visit the house Grandma used to live. Now, someone Grandma knew is living in the house, but he welcomed us very openly.

Loren enjoyed visiting Grandma when he was a young boy. He seemed to have many fond memories all around the house. I finally could see all the things the was talking about and put them together, so it was a great thing. I talked to her in my heart, "Grandma, I finally made it here. I see, you were baking cookies in this kitchen, huh? Oh, this is your garden you were talking about. And this is your bed room, and you worked with your sewing machine in this room...."

This past summer, I lost two very close people in my life.
I think one of the reasons why we cry when people pass away is because we miss being able to talk to the person and communicate and interact in tangible ways.  And I think another big reason is because we feel how much we've been loved by the person and by Creator through the person. It's a happy cry. It's a cry coming out of deep gratitude.

So, I would like to say thank you to every person I meet.
I would like to say thank you to this life.

Grandma, thank you. Thank you for loving me so much.
The days we spent together are stored in a special place of my heart, and it will always warm me up and comfort me. I wish to be a grandma like you.
Thank you.
