My Grandma in Uchiko 内子のおばあちゃん

Yesterday, I drove myself to Uchiko to see my grandma, Kayako.

昨日、一人で内子のカヤ子おばあちゃんに会いに行ってきました。

She is 87 years old. She has been living in this mountain by herself for 29 years. She is a strong woman I respect so much.

おばあちゃんは87歳。数えで88歳なので、この前の誕生日には米寿のお祝いをしたそうです。この内子の山に一人で暮らして29年が経とうとしています。すごいなぁといつも思います。おばあちゃんのようなおばあちゃんになることが、私の夢です。

First we chatted for an hour or so with a cup of tea.
Then I helped her clean the house.
After the cleaning, we had dinner together and chatted more.
She shared so many stories from a long time ago.
I enjoy listening to her childhood, how she met my grandpa, what it was like to raise 5 children before, during, and after the war, about my great grandparents, and more...

着いてからはまずおこたに座って、お茶をすすりながら一緒におしゃべり。
近況を報告し合って、それから家の掃除の手伝い。
掃除が終ってからは、夕飯を二人で食べました。
昔の話を色々と聞きました。
私はおばあちゃんの思い出話に耳を傾けるのが大好きです。
おばあちゃんの子ども時代、どうやっておじいちゃんと出会ったのか、戦前、戦時中、戦後の子育ての様子、ひいおじいちゃんやひいおばあちゃんのこと・・・。話は尽きません。
