Ty was invited to the annual Mt. Shasta Music Camp as one of their instructors at the last minute, so we headed to Mt. Shasta in California. This is a picture of a ripe tomato that I had as my snack. It will be funny if a tomato came down instead of an oxygen mask. Well, it won't be actually funny.
シャスタ山の麓で毎年行われているミュージックキャンプの講師の一人にと、タイに開催間際に依頼が来たので、二人で向かいました。これは飛行機に持ち込んだ私のおやつ（熟したトマト）。酸素マスクの代わりにこれが降りてきたらおかしいね。ってそんなマスクが必要なことが起こる時点で、全然おかしくないけど。
At Sacramento Airport. Your luggage comes out like this, and you have to climb up and get yours out like playing jenga!!
カリフォルニア州の北にあるサクラメント空港にて。こんな風にチェックインした荷物が出てきます。自分の荷物が見つかったら、登って取ってください。ジェンガで遊ぶときみたいに。
After some hours of drive from Sacramento Airport, we could see this beautiful Mount Shasta.
サクラメント空港から車で数時間、シャスタ山が見えてきました。
We could drink fresh spring water at the foothill of Mt. Shasta. Truly, it was the most delicious water I've ever had.
シャスタ山の麓から湧き出る水をそのまま汲んで飲むことが出来ました。正直、今まで飲んだことのある水の中で、一番おいしかったです。
My own drinking cup. Every participant made his or her own designed bracelet looking thing and attached it to a cup. Then everyone used his or her own cup to drink throughout the camp for a week. I thought that this was a great idea to reduce trash.

皆さん参加者の方はこのようにガラスの瓶に自分でデザインしたブレスレットのような物を取り付けて、そのコップを使って水を飲んでいました。こうしたら不必要なゴミも出ませんし、いいアイディアだと思いました。
While Ty and all the instructors were teaching, and all the students were taking their classes, other volunteers and I prepared meals for them. On this particular day, as you can see, we made sushi rolls.
タイや他の講師の方々が教え、参加者の生徒さんたちが一生懸命クラスを受けている間、私は他のボランティアの方々と一緒に、皆さんの食事を用意していました。この日は巻き寿司でした。
There were more cases than you can see in this photo. I'd never seen such many instrument cases at once place before :)
この写真に映っていないけど、もっとありました。一度にこんなに沢山の楽器用のケースを見るのは初めてでした。
There were many classes held simultaneously. The students had to make a hard decision which one to attend :) What a nice "classroom" this was.
沢山のクラスが同時に開かれ、参加者たちはどれを取るか、贅沢な悩みを抱えておりました。こんな風に野外で悠々と音楽を学べるなんてすてきですね。

There was a concert featuring all the wonderful musicians from the camp. This is a photo of the last rehearsal with Tristan Clarridge (cello) (unfortunately hidden by Simon in this photo), Simon Chrisman (dulcimer), and Jeremy Kittel (violin). Ty played with many more wonderful musicians at this concert. Their footage can be watched at toward the end of this YouTube video.
キャンプ開催中、キャンプ参加者と講師によるコンサートも開かれ、タイは沢山の素晴らしいミュージシャンの方々と演奏する機会がありました。この写真は、コンサート直前に最後のリハーサルをしているところ。手前がダルシマーを演奏しているサイモン・クリスマン。サイモンに隠れちゃって映ってないけど、チェロを演奏しているのがトゥリスタン・クラリッジ。向こう側でバイオリンを弾いているのは、ジェレミー・キッテル。４人が一緒に演奏している様子が上のYouTubeビデオの最後の方に映っています。
Most of the participants stayed at the campsite with their tents, but some instructors stayed at houses since we were not quite equipped with tent life. Here is the trio who shared a house. From left: Roger Tallroth, Ty, and Tony Trischka. They were so kind and hilarious at the same time. I had a wonderful time with them.
ほとんどの参加者はキャンプが開催された場所でテントを張り寝泊まりしていましたが、何人かの講師は、遠くから飛んで来たりとテントを持っていない人もいましたから、そういう人たちはあるお家に滞在させて頂きました。上の写真のトリオと私はある一軒家をシェアさせてもらいました。左からロジャー・タルロス、タイ、トニー・トリシュカ。この３人は信じられないくらい可笑しくて、そして親切な人たちでした。５日間に渡り、とてもすてきな時間を一緒に過ごさせてもらいました。
This music camp was started by two siblings: Tashina Clarridge and Tristan Clarridge. Congratulations to their dream come true. They are also actively touring around as a band called The Bee Eaters.
この素晴らしいキャンプを始めた、二人の姉弟にあっぱれと言いたいです。二人の名前はタシィーナ・クラリッジとトゥリスタン・クラリッジ。二人は他の人とビーイーターズというバンドを組んで活動中。
Ty had concerts in Seattle scheduled before he was invited to the music camp, so we left the camp although the camp was not done yet. There was a mini concert every night at the campsite, and the concert went on until 2 am on the night (or morning) of the day that we were leaving for Seattle. We packed up our baggage at 3 am and left Mt. Shasta for Medford Airport in Oregon. Ty drove for an hour and half and arrived at the airport at 4 am. We slept the entire flight to Seattle although it was too short for our tired bodies.
Tyはシアトルで前もって予定されていたコンサートがあったため、ミュージックキャンプはまだ終っていなかったのですが、私たちは6日目においとましました。キャンプでは毎晩夜遅くまで参加者だけでのミニコンサートがあったのですが、シアトルに発つ前の夜も、朝の２時までコンサートは続き、タイと私は荷物をまとめ朝３時にシャスタ山を出発し、一時間半運転し（タイがだけど）オレゴン州のメッドフォード空港に朝４時に着きました。これは着いたときの写真。そのまま飛行機に乗り込み、短い飛行時間は二人とも眠り、あっという間にシアトルに着いたのでした。
At Seattle Airport, we met up with Steve Oda, our dear friend and a wonderful sarode player. Then Ty's tabla student, Jon Crane who organized the concerts in Washington picked us up. I really like these people. I feel home being with them. Steve is like my uncle, and Jon is like my big brother. I was so happy to see them again.
The very first concert in Washington was held at Brisbane Island, so we took a ferry to get there from Seattle. The photo above was taken after we got on the ferry.
シアトル空港でサロード奏者であり、私たちのいとしの友、スティーブ・オダさんと落ち合いました。そして今回のシアトルでのコンサートを企画してくれたタイのタブラ生徒である、ジョン・クレインが迎えに来てくれました。私はこの二人が大好きです。まるで家族と会っているような気持ちがします。ジョンはお兄さんのようで、スティーブは伯父さんのようで。また会えて嬉しかったです。
ワシントンでの一番初めのコンサートはブリズベンアイランドで行われたので、シアトル側からフェリーでブリズベンに渡りました。上の写真は車ごとフェリーに乗り込んだところ。
This is Jon's working studio. In here, his gorgeous artwork are born. The tabla hooks that are available to purchase at Ty's website are made by him.
こちらはジョンの借りているスタジオ。ここで彼の素晴らしいアートワークが生み出されます。タイのウェブサイトで売られているタブラ用のフックなどは、彼がタイのインプットをもとに作りました。
In Brisbane Island, we stayed 3 nights at 2 beautiful homes, and it was because of Jon's girlfriend, Karen's kindness. Thank you very much, Karen!! Look at this thoughtful detail she prepared for us.
ブリズベンアイランドでの３泊は、素晴らしい二件のお家に滞在させて頂きました。それもジョンの彼女さんのキャレンさんの取り計らいのおかげです。キャレンさん、ありがとうございました！ こんな粋な演出までしてくれました。
Ty and I ate breakfast (or lunch) and slept so deeply until the sound check time.
タイと私は朝ご飯のようなお昼ご飯のような食事を取り、夕方のサウンドチェックの時間まで泥のように眠りました。

Thankfully, the concert in Brisbane was a success! It was a sold out concert, and people seemed to enjoy the concert very much!
有り難いことにブリズベンでのコンサートは大成功でした。売り切れ満員で、皆さん有意義な時間を過ごされたようです。

The next day, I got on the ferry again and went to Seattle to meet with an Odissi dancer, Chaitee Sengupta. I saw her name on the website and contacted her, and she kindly responded and made time to meet with me. She was a student of the late Asako Takami, a beautiful Japanese Odissi dancer who used to live in San Francisco. Asako Takami passed away in 2007 due to a cancer. Chaitee and I shared about losing our teachers, and it was a precious opportunity for me to feel Asako Takami even a bit through Chaitee's stories and photos.
翌日、一人でフェリーに乗りシアトルに向かいました。オディッシーダンサーのチャイティー・セングプタさんに会うためです。彼女のことをウェブサイト上で知り、連絡を取ってみたところ、ご親切に返事を頂き、是非会いましょうということになったのです。彼女はかつてサンフランシスコに住んで活動していた、とても素晴らしいオディッシーダンサーであった故・高見麻子さんの生徒でした。高見さんは癌のため2007年に若くして他界されました。チャイティーさんと私は恩師を亡くした経験を分かち合い、そしてチャイティーさんを通し、高見麻子さんを少しでも感じられたことは大変有り難いことでした。
Chaitee had a pakhawaj, a two-headed Indian drum that was given to her from Asako. She has not played it for awhile, and it needed to be tuned, so Ty did a quick fix-up for Chaitee. It was an honor for us to feel the vibration of the drum that Asako used to feel.
チャイティーは麻子さんからパカウェジュというインドのドラムを譲り受けていたのですが、随分演奏していなかったので調律が出来ていませんでした。そこでタイが簡単な修理と調律をしてくれました。かつて麻子さんが感じていた響きを感じることが出来たことは、光栄なことでした。

We flew out to out own destinations.
