My Fourth Scarf 4本目のマフラー

I finished knitting this scarf. I started it on Thanksgiving Day.

This is for Ty's stepmother in Chicago. I hope she will like it.

The more I knit, the more I love knitting.

The 1st Semester is Done 今学期が終わりました

This semester ended on the 17th.
After being hired 5 days prior to the first day of school, my first year of teaching at a public school began quite hectically, trying to get my classroom and lesson plans, and everything else ready. As much as I was completely absorbed in the overwhelming amount of work, as the days passed, I started to have some room in my life and heart to purely enjoy the teaching experience itself. No matter how tired I was, I could get up every morning by thinking about how much fun my students and I would have that day. I deeply appreciate this wonderful blessing I have - to be doing my dream-job.

学校の今学期が17日に無事終わりました。

8月の新学期の始まる5日前に雇われ、大急ぎで教室やレッスンプランを用意し、初めて教えさせていただいた公立小学校、無我夢中でやってきた過去5ヶ月でした。無我夢中ではありましたが、少しずつ楽しむ余裕も生まれ、いくら大変でも、どんなに朝眠くても（7時には家を出るので）、子供たちと過ごす毎日が楽しみでやってこれました。こうして夢の職業に就かせてもらっていることに心から感謝します。

Word Wall - Contraction ワードウォール(壁) - 前置詞と冠詞の縮約

My students are learning how to contact words together.

For example, "I" and "have" together make "I've."

It is a bit tricky, so I made this word wall, and I am planning to create a game out of this...

前置詞と冠詞の縮約について、子供たちが勉強しています。
例えば、「I」と「have」が一緒になると、「I've」になるといった。
ちょっと慣れるまでは、子供たちの頭の周りに、「？」マークがたくさん飛び回っているように見えます。なので、教室の壁にこんなものをを作ってみました。これでゲームをしようと思っています。

There are so many things I want to do with them, and I just don't seem to have an enough time to do all :-)
There are only 3 more days of school, and the winter break will begin.
I will miss my kiddos, but it will be nice for all of us to have a break.

子供たちとしたいことを挙げていったらきりが無いというくらい、色々アイディアがあります。時間がちょっと足りないんだけど。学校もあと3日で冬休みに入ります。
子供たちに会えないのはさみしいけど、でも子供たちも私も休みが必要！

Cute Hawaii-Born Snowmans ハワイ生まれのかわいい雪だるまたち

My students and I made a new calendar for this month, and the children wanted to make snowmans to decorate the calendar, so we did.

今月（12月）用のカレンダーを生徒たちと作りました。
生徒たちの希望で、雪だるまでカレンダーを飾りました。

It's interesting to see how each snowman is different even thought the children got the same material to use.

同じ材料を同じ数だけもらった子供たち。それでも一つ一つの雪だるまが、個性をもってユニークにできあがるのが、とても興味深い。

We felt the white snow in this tropical island.

(The "white snow" were made with glue and white sparkles.)

子供たちとこのトロピカルな島で、ホワイトスノーを少しだけ感じたのでありました。

（白い雪に見立てたのは、のりを置いた直後に白いキラキラしたプラスチックで出来た粉を振りかけて乾かしたもの。）

A Handmade Soap 手作り石鹸

One of my Maui friends, Chimiko-chan gave me this beautiful soap which was handmade by her. (She even made this little bag for the soap.)

I have many wonderful friends who are creative; they can produce things that I usually buy at stores - very inspiring and empowering.

Chimiko is also a talented illustrator who recently provided illustrations to her friend's published yoga book.

Billy Elliot リトル・ダンサー

There are many, many wonderful movies, and among those, this is one of those I strongly like - "Billy Elliot. (2000)"

If you are a dancer, this is a must, and if you are not, this is still a great one; you will be inspired to follow your dream whatever it might be. It's quite humorous, too.

My favorite scene is the very end where Billy's dad is sobbing in the audience. That's where I cry every time I watch :-)

Thanksgiving on Lanai 感謝祭の日をラナイで

Last week, on Thanksgiving Day, I was invited to go to Lanai by my dance teacher, Sarala. I had taken a day trip there once before to surf at Manele Bay during a summer, but I had never camped there, so I thought that it would be fun to stay over night and spend time with my dance teacher and her family, so I joined the adventure :-)

先週の感謝祭（サンクスギビング）の祝日に、私の踊りの先生であるサララから、一緒にラナイ（マウイのお隣の島）に行かないかというお誘いを受けました。それまでに一度、ある夏に日帰りで、ラナイのマネレベイにサーフィンをしに行ったことはあったのですが、キャンプをしたことはありませんでした。ラナイで一泊二日過ごしてくるのも、サララ先生の家族と過ごすのも楽しいなぁと思い、そのお誘いにのりました。

Rhythmic Revolution 11/13/2010 リズミック・レボリューション

I enjoyed the performance, "Rhythmic Revolution" at MACC on November 13th. Sarala, Malati, and I performed Mohana Pallavi after Sarala did a short solo piece.

It was an honor to share the dance stage with renowned performers such as Chloe Arnold, performer, choreographer and former artistic director for Debbie Allen Productions. The show featured performers including Emmy Award-winner Jason Samuels Smith, Broadway and film star Mark Mendonca, Japan's graceful and percussive Yukiko Misumi. And from Maui, we had an elegant Odissi dancer, Sarala Dandeker, a passionate flamenco dancers, Vanessa Carrito and Indio Kualii, and Sunny Gorg brought a fun Afro Caribbean dance piece with her dancers.

I learned a lot by watching their performance from the side of the stage. I thank how fortunate I am to be given such opportunity!

11月13日にMACCで行われた、「リズミック・レボリューション」のパフォーマンス、楽しんできました。サララ先生の短いソロの後、サララ先生とマラティと私で「モハナ・パラビィ」というピースを踊ってきました。

卓越したパフォーマーの皆さんと、ステージをシェアでき光栄でした。振り付け師であり、有名なタップダンサーであるChloe Arnoldを始めとし、エミーアワードを受賞したJason Samuels Smithや、ブロードウェイや映画などでも有名なMark Mendonca、そして日本を代表するタップダンサーであるYukiko Misumiさんという大物たちとの共演でした。そしてマウイからは、私の先生であり優雅なオディッシィダンサーSarala Dandeker、情熱的なフラメンコダンサーVanessa Carritoと彼女の旦那さまでもあり、素晴らしいミュージシャンでもあるIndio Kualii、そして楽しいアフロカリビアンなダンスを披露してくれたSunny Gorgとその生徒さんたち。

皆さんの踊りを舞台脇から見て、たくさんのことを学びました。このような機会を与えていただき、誠にありがたいことです。

This time, I didn't forget to paint the nails.
But it was a lot of work as I don't paint them at all (in my everyday life).
As soon as I painted them, I could not wait to take them off.
I feel like my nails cannot breath when they're painted.

今回は忘れずにちゃんと爪も塗りましたよ。
でもマニキュアを普段全く塗らない私は、塗るのに一苦労でした。
そして塗ったとたんに、もうとってしまいたくてうずうず。
爪が息をできてないような気がしてイヤなのです。

Haleakala Waldorf School Diwali Festival

It's always wonderful to dance for children.

We were invited to dance Odissi at Haleakala Waldorf School's 5th graders' Diwali festival last week.

Their immersible curriculum in which the students get to deeply experience a culture they are learning about is wonderful.

こどもたちの前で踊れることは、いつもうれしいです。

先週、クラにあるハレアカラ・ルドルフ・スクールの5年生のディワリーのお祭りにおよばれして、一つオディッシィダンスを踊ってきました。

こうしてゲストまで招いて、勉強している文化について深く、深く学ぶ機会を生徒に与える学校のカリキュラムはすごいなぁと思います。

I think I will be a professional pirate with these.

Maybe I should teach wearing these :)

Kindness Board 思いやりボード

I made this board called "Kindness Board" where the children can post Post-it notes to share anyone's kind act they witnessed. I made this in order for all of us to focus on positiveness in us. It is heart-warming to read their small notes :-)

「カインドネス（親切・思いやり）ボード」というものを作ってみました。クラスメイトの親切な行いを、ポストイットという、一時的に貼り付けられる付箋に書き込み、それをこのボードに貼り付けます。私たちの教室のポジティブな行いに、お互いにもっと目を向けられたらいいなと思い、作りました。子供たちの書いたものを見ていると、かわいくて、心が温められます。

I will be dancing in a show called "Rhythmic Revolution" at Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) this coming Saturday. It sounds like different dance forms will be blended nicely together, and I am honored to be a part of it!

What wells up inside こみあがるもの

Often it is said (at least in Japan) that 'trouble makers' are the dear ones.

Usually (always?), there are at least a couple of students who take attention, time, and energy of a teacher...
Well, yes, there are some in my class this year.
But they are dear to me.
They all do their best and have kind hearts.
I repeat the same thing with them a day after day, and I sometimes wonder if they would ever get it.

However, as you know, children grown every single day and go beyond my wonder, and before I know it, they turn into a butterfly from a chrysalis.

Each moment when I witness that, something warm wells up inside my heart and boils my love for them.

(Today, one girl came up to me saying, "Miss Akari, I made a book for you." I read it after school, and it made my day and helped me to appreciate this wonderful occupation I have.)

「手のかかる子ほど　かわいい」って言いますよね。

いつも一つの教室に何人かは、どうしても手のかかる子がいます。
今年のクラスにもちらほらと。
でも一生懸命な子たちです。
心の優しい子たちです。

同じことを毎日繰り返しています。「一体いつ出来るようになるかしら？」と、その過程を思うと気が遠くなるようなこともあります。それでも日々子供たちは成長しており、私の想像なんか軽く飛び越して、 ある日急にさなぎから蝶に変容し、その瞬間を目にする度に、胸にあついものがこみあげ、その「あついもの」が、子供たちに対する愛をさらに温めるのです。

（今日、ある女の子が「先生に本を作ったよ」と言って、お手製の本（4ページにわたる）をくれました。放課後、一人その「本」を読み、教師であることの醍醐味と意義を深く想ったのでありました。）

On 10/27, I welcomed my 28th birthday.

Thank you very much for your warm wishes.

I deeply appreciated and felt joyous to be alive being loved by each one of you.

This year, rain sang a beautiful song for me on my birthday, so I did not go up to the top of Haleakala like I always do.

Yet, I did a very special thing on the night of my birthday which was as sacred and special as going up to Haleakala.

I danced Odissi. I did with Sarala and Malati.

I was thankful for starting a new year with an Odissi dance, and I felt that my new year will be a big Odissi year for me.

10月27日に無事28回目の誕生日を迎えました。

沢山の、温かいメッセージをありがとうございました。

皆さんに愛されて、今ここにいることを、心からありがたく、うれしく思いました。

今年の誕生日は、雨がしとしと、どしゃどしゃときれいに降ってくれたので、毎年恒例のハレアカラには行きませんでした。

その代わりに、ハレアカラに行って誕生日のセレモニーをするくらいとても特別なことがありました。

オディッシィダンスを誕生日の夜に踊る機会に恵まれました。
サララ先生とマラティと三人で踊ってきました。

新しい一年がオディッシィを踊ることで幕開けし、とてもオディシィダンスな一年になるような気がしました。

My Friend and Her Baby 親友と赤ちゃん

I had several reasons to fly to Oahu this weekend, so I took advantage of that occasion and saw one of my best friends from high school in Honolulu. Her name is Chika. She and I went to the same high school in Kochi, and during those years, we spent so many hours together, probably more than we did with our own families. Some of you might recognize her from past of my past blog entries (like this one - Chika's Wedding). Yes, congratulations to her - she gave birth to a beautiful boy 6 months ago. Isn't he a gem?

今週末は色々な理由でオアフへ行くことになったので、その機会にあやかり、ホノルルに住んでいる高校時代からの親友の一人である知佳に会ってきました。 高知西高校で新体操部に入っていた私たち。当時は、家族と過ごした時間よりも部活仲間と過ごした時間の方が長かったです。私のブログを長年読んでくださっている方は、お気づきかもしれませんが、彼女は過去のブログに何度か登場しております。（こちらのブログでは彼女の結婚式について書きました。）そうなんです。おめでたいことに、彼女は半年前に元気な男の子を出産しました。宝石のような赤ちゃんでしょ？ハルキくんといいますよ。

Haruki's beautiful pointing toe. For some reason, he did not want to put his whole foot down. Whenever he felt a hard surface, he put only the toes down :-)

こちらの写真ではハルキの、きれいにポワウントされた足先が見られます。なぜか、硬い表面に足がつくと、足の裏をべったりつけるのではなく、つま先だけというこだわりがありました。

A smile like this - like the bright shining sun - melts any negativity and makes me feel everything would be all right.

この笑顔を見てください。
満面に輝く太陽のようなこの笑顔を見ていると、全てが大丈夫で、何かもやもやしていたものも、とけていくような気がします。

Quite many friends who are the same age as me have become mothers (or fathers). I am sometimes caught in surprise by this fact. Somehow, we all grew up to a point where it's natural for us to be parenting little beings. Wow. I am in awe of this life's process, and I think it's beautiful, and I am happy for all of my mommy and daddy friends!

同い年の友人の中で、既にお母さん（もしくはお父さん）になった友人が結構います。時々この事実にふっと驚きます。「あれ？いつの間に私たち、そんなに大きくなったの？」小さな赤ちゃんを腕に抱き、「自分の子」と言っても全然変じゃない年頃になったのですね。転んでひざをすりむいて泣いていた同級生が、立派に子供をあやしている様子を見たりすると、その人生の流れ自体に尊敬の念が生まれます。お母さんお父さんになった友達よ、本当におめでとう！
